This is so cool I just had to put it together in one post. Some time ago, during the Jesus Family Center arts festival in November 2007, they let children (and some adults!) come up front and paint pictures during the church service. The pastor's wife painted this beautiful picture of a child's hand on top of an adult's hand:

I thought the picture was beautiful and moving, and showed a tenderness I couldn't put into words... especially if you think of the big hand as God's hand.

Fast-forward four years to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan. A few months after the disaster I felt called to go to Fukushima and paint pictures for disaster survivors, particularly for nuclear refugees. I would pray for someone and God would give me a picture. Sometimes it took some time as I asked God what to paint.

Once when praying for a pregnant woman, God told me to paint the picture that the pastor's wife had painted in 2007 and give it to her, and to add the scripture from Jeremiah 1:5 -- "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you."

I painted as quickly as I could while the mother was getting supplies with her mom outside, and then I had a fellow volunteer give it to her (because I had to work on another person's painting). When she read the verse she exclaimed, "The Bible really says that??"

In later trips volunteering in Fukushima, I was impressed to paint that picture again four more times (one with a cute variation) for four more mothers!
I just love how God works! That original painting made by the pastor's wife... she had no idea that it would go all the way across Japan to be a blessing to five different mothers and their families, to let them know how God loves them and their children even before they're born!

I spent some time drawing with my daughter Joanna shortly before she turned three years old. She loves drawing, but her progress has been a bit slower than Timo. She's actually incredibly focused and persistent, but very stubborn and only wants to do what she wants to do, haha!

I let her use my ink and she made most of the picture on the bottom, and I put the heart on top of it, and then a lot of water to mix up the colors and make it look more solid. Then she wanted to draw more, but she wanted me to draw! Just to make her happy I relented. =)

She wanted another heart, and I put that in the middle. Then I think she fed me some colors and asked me to do something else, and in that way I did the pictures surrounding the heart with the colors she gave me. I just wanted to paint something cute that she could understand, and didn't plan on what I was going to paint. But the result really looks like it had been planned, I think! It turned out to be quite a picture of God's love!

Timo asked me about a picture I did yesterday, of Jesus on the cross and the two rebels on either side of him. I quickly hid the picture from him at the time yesterday because I didn't want to tell him about the painfulness of that... I told him I'd explain it later.

So today while drawing Ultraman characters, he asked again (and I prayed quietly) and explained that Jesus died on the cross, but He came back later. It hurt a lot, and He was taking the punishment for all of us. He asked who the other two people on crosses were, and I said they were some bad guys who were being punished, but one of them saw Jesus and said that He didn't do anything bad, and he changed his mind and became good. It helped that in an Ultraman Zero episode Timo watched, one hero named Mirror Knight had been turned into a bad guy, but Ultraman Zero held him and changed him back into a good guy... that's what Jesus does for us! That's what He did for us by dying on the cross! (Never thought Ultraman would help teach my son the gospel!)

Timo paused, puzzled, and asked how Jesus stayed on the cross. I paused, too, before deciding to just tell him about the nails. It hurt a lot. And actually, Jesus is God, and so He's strong, stronger than any Ultraman or anything. So He didn't have to stay there on the cross, but He loved us so much that He wanted to take our punishment for us. So He stayed there, died and came back. (Of course Timo asked other practical questions like, "How did He get off the cross after that?") I told him that when we see scars on hands we think "Ouch!" and the pain, but when Jesus sees the scars on His hands He thinks of us and loves us! So I ran to go show him one of my pictures with the hearts on Jesus' hands, but Timo beat me to it and said, "That's why He has the hearts on His hand."

I asked him why he put the blue on Jesus in the middle. He said he didn't know, haha. Just because the blue was there. I told him that sometimes we talk about Jesus' love like water... but maybe that was too deep for today.

Last night I was watching a year-end special on TV about the March earthquake and tsunami, and my son Timo (4 and a half years old) was watching some of it with me. Back in March when we were watching the tsunami on TV, I decided to let Timo watch sometimes and explain to him what was happening, and tell him how it had to be hard for the people. So when we saw it again on TV last night, he started drawing pictures of it!

Of course I was a little worried about too much of this. Whenever I watched these things on TV, I was always careful to change the channel or turn it off if people were screaming, if someone was dying, or if I thought the images would be too traumatic. So this time as he was drawing more and more, I was praying about it and felt God say it was OK, and then asked Timo if he could draw Jesus with the people, comforting them...

Timo drew a picture of Jesus crying and holding broken buildings. I was surprised and moved by what he drew. It wasn't what I suggested he draw, and that's good, actually! Instead Jesus showed Timo that He understands our pain and cries with us.

And that was one of the reasons that I was letting Timo watch some of the tsunami on TV alongside me was so that he could understand a little of what people were experiencing, so he could sympathize with them, and later on, so he could understand why Daddy left sometimes to go to Fukushima for a little while.

Ramonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03694246018677395516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330150419445303500.post-74036431368326534232011-12-13T16:50:00.000+09:002012-10-13T16:51:27.908+09:00Jesus is Sad When Mommy is Sad (by Timo)

I was probably drawing with something (having felt impressed on which colors to bring with me that day), and he wanted to draw, too. So I let him, and he made these swirls. When I turned it on its side and looked at it, it really looked like worship to me, golden swirls of it going round as you worship. Hey, He did say that our faith is more precious to Him than gold! (1st Peter 1) So what is our worship worth to Him? I know what my son is worth to me! Do you know how much you are worth to Him?

I thought of two names for the picture. Either "Hallelu Yah!" (which Timothy had just started saying recently) or "Yahweh!!!" (which is God's name, of course, and also who Bono cries out to in a U2 song that Timo and I both like). Both really express it! I let him choose, and he went back & forth, but finally settled on "Hallelu Yah!"Ramonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03694246018677395516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330150419445303500.post-38084158806393388432009-02-08T00:07:00.005+09:002009-05-29T00:15:10.832+09:00Faith<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 311px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9ZE0O8P-RhdmTFLouPfB27uJJYvqD-rRs21sXWPcyr84zEbVH6zziuQ4j56gc9ued_ORCbzPtdWXFrycKM9z2FLLoMFNMul6Nsgu944a8bF713UjQh8-Eo8I95IiFyiJUy1Y_UXXMZpQ/s400/Faith+-+by+Madalyne+R..JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300072394991232818" />

By Madalyne R.

Her mom wrote: My eleven year old daughter came home from school last week and asked me the questions, "why doesn't God just SHOW Himself? I showed her your picture of "God Hides" (I think that was the name of it) and I wish I could post for you what she drew out of that. The other one, right next to it, was the same face, but in place of the eyes, was the word FAITH and a HUGE smile and of course no circle or slash through it. It was precious. That person was seeing by faith!Ramonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03694246018677395516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330150419445303500.post-83672193669712558312009-02-08T00:07:00.004+09:002009-02-15T01:26:02.860+09:00King

By Timothy Romero - February 3, 2009
From the lips of children and infants
You have ordained praise. (Psalm 8:2)

The children were shouting in the temple area,
"Hosanna to the Son of David!" (Matthew 21:15)
While we were at a clinic today waiting, I did a picture on a small pad. After I finished, I turned to a new page and let Timothy draw with the ink-brush pens. As I gave him the final brush-pen, dark blue, he seemed to focus more and know what he was doing, making a little circle sort of in the bottom right center of the page.

Then I got the idea of asking him what it was, something we had not done before with his drawings. He is one month shy of two years old, and though his vocabulary is growing, his pronunciation is sometimes a mystery. (For example, he likes to talk about "shishiko" but we have no exactly what that is!) So when he answered something that sounded like "Cain" or "Keen", I of course said it was good but had no idea what he meant, and set about trying to figure it out. I thought maybe he'd given it his own name, so I pointed to a picture of a train on the wall to check... but he said it wasn't a train. I tried asking him if it was something else within sight --cars, trucks, etc.-- but he said no. Eventually when we got home I opened up the picture again, and Yoko & I tried a few more ideas. Yoko hit gold with the sound-and-song ABC book, pointing at the picture next to "K"...

"King"!

It's funny because we haven't practiced that letter much with him, nor taught him "king" (which is alongside "K"). We haven't heard him pressing that button much. But it was in his head, and he knew that is what he was drawing today. As I thought about it while doing the dishes, and as I type about it now, I was and am overwhelmed in the Spirit ...because he knew what he was drawing. It was then that I remembered how he suddenly focused and made the brush go in a small circle, something he had not done before.

I'm overwhelmed and taken aback. It would be easy to attribute it to a coincidence or simple "wow", but it's not. I know it even more because the Spirit just hits me and witnesses to me about this. God is talking to my son, and talking through him. (>o<) I am aghast, blessed, and filled with awe. Now I feel a bit of need for responsibility! Oh Lord!

God is good. He'll carry us. Thank You, God!Ramonehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03694246018677395516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330150419445303500.post-83287580185545689962008-09-22T15:10:00.002+09:002011-06-04T20:17:33.553+09:00Kid's Heart

By Ramone & Timothy - September 17, 2008

I broke open some new kids' ink colors for my son Timothy to play with, and we scribbled on a few pads.
Last November 3-4, Jesus Family Center had an "arts weekend". During the worship time, they put out materials to paint with and anyone who wanted to could go paint what the Holy Spirit showed them and whatever they had in their heart...

And of course the kids went forward immediately! "A little child shall lead them!" Yes, become like children to enter the Kingdom!
Here are some of the works that I took pictures of...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27VcXtC3xUr5u4bhXp_4vsPs8XWI0Vy_KJi5XqnzYgABiLE-6EmbPyu_af0KXcoZF83qKZiNbir3m_aFG3olFncUyNsIcZi1Ut_x0pHqp76scie0lGJ6Av1D82ljZwugc9TF3W6bGBKw/s320/JFAW07+-+1+(Kaito+Hirao).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243957789151387202" />

This one (above) is by the pastor's older son. I didn't get to ask him what it meant, but I like it. (^_^)

"Jesus's Love" is the title of this one... I like the colors, the freshness of the green, the way the heart seems to come from the cross like big arms waiting to wrap us in His love!

The pastor's wife made this beautiful picture. I don't know what to say about it or exactly what it "means", but it is beautiful and loving. [Update: See how this painting "traveled"!]

The pastor's son made this one, too... he named it "The Flame of the Lord".

One of the girls at the church painted this and titled it, "The Baptism By God". Maybe before we are "dark", and after dipping in Him and being washed new, we are bright, "light in the Lord" as Paul said!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNJDsmOuxGfIKIdTpi5MfNo724f4YXvkAk8LmLjQ08SkIl0rRyZv-KhwKTBP48G6vM48SAqdDIAqJsNYP11jkmO3zQKIRnKAt2MkLTwbaLUQkVwknytROeo-KeDju6wBjarkOfnp1y7uM/s320/JFAW07+-+7.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243958230934410610" />

I don't know which kids did these, but I like them. The first one is like the sunshine of His love, of His heart, and the second one just makes me smile. (^_^)

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw5X-d1_zrYz_Eyc5r4OB-iJlbuC_RdG-SJb-esF0unhrIizCuPRou2Ei5l3RsUNl_O7jMatOp2taytFdQsBZRaJJ0CRN9ROEou-IQZNNT43C_f_oa0RcHjlfO5JdNov9GSlGtAuNd-_o/s320/JFAW07+-+8+(Angel%27s+Field+-+Moe+Manabe).JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5243958230339614034" />

Another girl did this one, "Angel's Field". Maybe this is us? We are His field, His building (1 Cor.3), after all. Kids can really see God's joy, don't you think? And often they actually see angels... more than adults.

Unsigned and untitled, this one is a beautiful blotch of colors! To me it looks like the Cross and His heart, and then us washed in His blood, with the signs of His sunshine, His promise, His rain and His love in the sky.

The girl who did this one named it "The Cross's Light".

This one by a little British girl is called "Jesus Family" (the name of the church!) ... I think it looks like a garden, don't you? And the Cross grows into His love!

This one's really good. I don't know who did it, but the placement and design and colors are very nice. It seems like the desert to me, and the light from heaven coming onto the cross and showing us His heart of love.

This last one is unsigned and unnamed, but I love the color and "artistry" of it. Now that I look at it, I realize that several of these pictures have had a heart coming out of the top of the cross! I wonder what this means? His heart coming out of the cross? True! Out of that terrible thing (the cross) came His love for us. On this one, the blue (sky I presume) reminds me of the "firmament above the heavens" in Genesis, the waters in the sky. Maybe here we see how the Cross (made by His heart) is where all things converge... the blessing of heaven (the waters of the Spirit) waiting to pour out above on us and the earth.
After worship and lunch, they had a special time when the kids could make some decorations and banners. They did so with tennis balls, sticks, and their hands!
I love this last up-close picture. Not only is it cute and beautiful "art", but somehow it just says something deep and touching from God. What do you think? I think so. Bless you in Jesus with His heart, with the heart of a child in Him!
